Amsterdam

Amsterdam, named for a dam on the Amstel river, began as a small 13th century fishing village. Today the city is the capital of The Netherlands and is both the cultural and business center of the country. Known for its museums, canals and nightlife, Amsterdam attracts over 4 million tourists each year. The city is home to around 1 million people.
